I saw the TV show before I read the manga, and actually rather liked it for its creeping strangeness and sense of delirium. It doesn't hang together that well as a narrative, which I would attribute to the fact that Miike also wrote the script, but there are at least two or three memorable images or ideas in each episode. And the song is great. It certainly didn't ruin the comics for me - it's half the reason I went to the bookstore and bought the whole series in one go (that and the fact they're only 200 yen each or something ridiculous like that).

There is a tv-serial adaptation of MPD, directed (most of it) by Miike Takashi. You can even rent them at Blockbuster (subtitled) but I don't recommend it. It's a very very poor adapation of the manga. It's replaced all the tension, mystery, humor, and strangeness from the manga with boredom, confusion, and lousy special effects. It's unfortunate since Miike normally is a very innovative director of films, and many cast are excellent actors and actresses in their own right. I strongly caution anyone who likes the manga from renting or buying this tv series because it will completely ruin the manga for you.
